Volunteers conclude 370-day stay in simulated lunar base

Liu Hong, chief designer of self-contained simulated space lab Yuegong-1 (Lunar Palace 1), is interviewed at Beihang University in Beijing on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. The lab was built by Chinese experts for the "Lunar Palace 365" project designed to see how the Bio-regenerative Life Support System (BLSS) might work in a lunar environment and how humans can mentally and physically cope in such conditions. Researchers sit in the "Lunar Palace 365" experiment control room as they monitor the situation inside the simulated space lab at Beihang University in Beijing on Saturday, April 21, 2018. In an ongoing year-long experiment that started on May 10 last year, eight student volunteers, split into two groups, have lived in Lunar Palace 1 for shifts lasting 60, 200, and 110 days, respectively. Four volunteers step out of the Yuegong-1, a self-contained simulated space lab, at Beihang University in Beijing on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. They were originally scheduled for a 105-day stay that would end on May 10 but were asked to stay for another five days to see how they would mentally cope with the sudden change. The four had previously spent 60 days in the lab before being released on July 9, 2017.

Chief designer Liu Hong announced at the event that the next step of the research is to try to take a mini version of their BLSS lab out to space. [Photo: China Plus]

Vegetables and fruits that were cultivated inside the self-contained simulated space lab Yuegong-1 are being displayed at Beihang University in Beijing. The 150-square-meter lab includes a cabin, where the volunteers lived and worked, and two plant cabins where staple food crops and vegetables were grown. The crops and vegetables included wheat, potatoes, carrots, soybeans, cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes. [Photo: China Plus]
