China National Disability Day: Artist living with schizophrenia paints a new life
Today marks China's 35th National Disability Day. The China Disabled Persons' Federation says there are 85 million people living with disabilities in the country. Promoting their comprehensive development embodies the concrete practice of Chinese modernization. CGTN'sGuoTianqispoke to a recognized painter living with schizophrenia, who uses art to inspire others.

JIANG WEI Artist "Hello everyone, I'm Jiang Wei, known as 'China's Van Gogh.' But I'll never be Van Gogh. I'm short andchubby,I'm absolutely obsessed with painting. I love drawing cute things – little animals, nature,flowers. And in my paintings, light is always flowing."

Like Van Gogh, Jiang Wei has a unique understanding of color, but he also shares his struggle with mental illness. He's been taking medication since being diagnosed with schizophrenia about 20 years ago. The side effects have left him with stiff limbs and memory loss.

JIANG WEI Artist "I just painted. Painting made me happy. I painted a lot during that time –hundreds of pieces."

Due to his mental illness, he lost his job and had no income for many years. It wasn't until last year that his works gained recognition online. Through his art, people saw "the power of life."

HAO LI Artist, Li Gallery "Jiang Wei is painting through his life – depicting family bonds, friendship, and gratitude toward the world. It's something even healthy people struggle to achieve, which is why we held an exhibition for him free of charge."

LAI SHENGYU Jiang Wei's Teacher atBeihangUniversity "He has been giving back to society with his own capabilities. A portion of his income from selling paintings is donated to patients who suffered from mental illness and poor students."

JIANG WEI Artist "Of course, I hope my works will hang in the Louvre one day, but I don't think that far ahead now. I just hope my paintings can bring spiritual warmth to people with conditions like mine."
